  5. When should I start studying for SAT's?

As soon as possible! SAT I & II exams are critical for college admission and it is never too early to start preparing. In exams such as the SAT I Verbal, skills such as vocabulary must be built up over a period of years rather than days or months. Beginning SAT preparation as early as 7th grade will greatly aid success and ease stress when the actual exam comes in the later years of high school.

  6. How is the New SAT different from the SAT in the past?

Beginning in 2005, the College Board has employed a new format for the SAT I. The new SAT I contains a new writing section, making the exam longer and scored out of 2400 rather than 1600 points. The mathematics section has be expanded to include concepts in Algebra II. While all colleges that accept the current SAT guarantee acceptance of the new exam, the UC system will only be accepting scores from the new SAT for students in the high school class of 2006 or younger.

  7. Which SAT II's should I take?

A student should take SAT II exams in subjects that relate to academic areas of interest in college and beyond. If you are applying undeclared, it would be most practical to take SAT II's in subjects where you are most confident. However, some science and technology focused universities such as MIT and CalTech require certain SAT II science exams such as Physics, Chemistry, or Biology, in order to apply.

  8. Do I need to take AP exams?

While taking an AP course does not require that you take the exam, it is highly recommended for students to take the exams for several reasons. First of all, many colleges will award university credit for subject areas where a student has received a passing score on the AP exam. Also, taking AP exams makes students more competitive for college admissions, as it demonstrates a capability to perform academically at a university level. It is possible to take AP exams without enrolling in the AP class, and AP exams will often save money and time in college.
